Our Story

Anne’s PEI Farm Story

Anne’s PEI Farm, located in Prince Edward Island, Canada, was established in 2007 as a partnership between two organic farmers, a processor, and a buyer, with the goal of establishing new national and international markets for organic and non-genetically modified (non-GMO) products grown on small and medium sized family farms on Prince Edward Island. Following a value chain business model, our goal at Anne’s PEI Farm is to work collaboratively with island farmers and processors, and national and international buyers to produce high quality, healthy food that can be successfully grown on Prince Edward Island for a price that will yield a fair return to everyone involved in growing, processing and selling, while still being affordable for you as our customers.

Early on, Japan became an important trading partner due to the strong cultural connections that exist between our two countries resulting from Japan’s interest in the Anne of Green Gables story, and a personal connection that Raymond Loo’s (an organic farmer and founding partner in Anne’s PEI Farm) grandfather had with the country as a result of accompanying silver foxes from Prince Edward Island to Japan in 1921. On his first visit to Japan to explore potential opportunities, Raymond joined forces with Kosaku Morita, (a Japanese food importer specialist). Together the two identified a few initial products for which there was demand in the Japanese market not being met by local suppliers. The crops that they initially decided to focus on were organically produced berry preserves; non-GMO canola; organic soybeans; and organic dandelion roots (for use in the production of dandelion coffee).

At Anne’s PEI Farm, we see our island location as an asset. All of our products can be traced from your table all the way back to the island farm on which they were produced. This increases consumer confidence, and establishes a relationship between you as our customers, and island-based processors and farmers. We encourage you to get to know the island farmers who grew the product(s) that you are enjoying by reading their farmer profiles, and peruse the photo gallery of our island’s breathtaking land and seascapes.

Being an island is also an asset for growing non-GMO products. There are currently only a few places in the world that still claim non-GMO status for the production of canola. Prince Edward Island is one of these places, which means you can be confident that our canola oil is made with 100% non-GMO and organic canola. Read more about non-GMO crops.
