Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables is a story written by L.M. Montgomery in 1908. The story follows the life of an orphan, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on Prince Edward Island. As a result of a series of miscommunications, she is mistakenly delivered to Matthew and Marilla, and elderly brother and sister who had made a request for a boy to help out on their farm. Despite the mishap, Anne quickly endears herself to Matthew, who decides to welcome her into his home and heart. The story is written through the eyes of Anne as she grows up on Prince Edward Island. As the story unfolds, we watch her explore the wonders of the Island’s natural world, and form lasting friendships within her community, which she comes to love dearly. The plot is marked by many adventures along the way, most of which are brought on by her rather ostentatious personality, and a temper as fiery in vigour as her long bright red hair is in colour. Ultimately, she wins the hearts of both Matthew and Marilla, who are very proud of her many successes. Over the years, Anne has become one of the most loveable fictional characters in literature, capturing the hearts and imagination of readers all around the world.

The author of Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery, was raised in Cavendish, a medium sized town located in Queens County, in central Prince Edward Island. Anne of Green Gables was inspired by the land, the sea and the people that surrounded Lucy Maud Montgomery during her lifetime. The story, in turn, has generated an image of the Island that draws visitors from around the world to Prince Edward Island to visit the Green Gables House, which has been designated as a cultural and historic landmark. A modest farmhouse is just one feature of the site, which also includes an extensive exhibit describing the characteristics of rural life on Prince Edward Island during Montgomery’s lifetime. Visitors to the Green Gables House can also enjoy descriptions by Montgomery of the beautiful island landscape: rolling farmland gently sloping down to the red shoreline, sandstone cliffs and quaint villages.
