Non-GMO Canola Production Flowchart
We begin preparing the land two years in advance by enriching our soil with various forms of marine, animal and/or plant derived sources of nutrients
Whenever possible, we source our non-GMO seed from locally grown sources
We plant all our canola in mid-May, just as the spring rains are saturating the Island soil
Weed control helps to encourage best crop growth and yield
We swathe our canola in August, and harvest it in September. This gives the canola seed time to ripen evenly so that it is easier to combine it
We cure our canola for approximately six weeks during which time temperature and moisture levels are closely monitored
After six weeks, moisture levels are checked, and if necessary, our canola is taken to a local processing plant to be dried. The ideal moisture level is approximately 7.5%
Once moisture levels have reached 7.5% the canola is loaded into containers, transported to Halifax, and shipped by sea to our partners in Japan
Once it reaches Japan, the seed is pressed into delicious, high quality culinary oil by Ohta Oil, one of our Japanese distributors
